Notable News from the Libraries

Soon, the Libraries’ will be swarming with dedicated students eager to complete their final exams after a semester full of demanding deadlines. Throughout the school year, the Ohio University Libraries’ staff has been similarly busy. Here is a look at what the Libraries has been up to.

In January 2013, Chad Boeninger, head of reference, was accepted to be part of the Mentor Corp for ILEAD Ohio. Mentors are selected to aid Ohio librarians in implementing web technologies that inspire leadership, community participation, innovation and positive change.

Hilary Bussell, eLearning librarian, co-wrote a chapter titled “Curricular Use of the iPad 2 by a First-Year Undergraduate Learning Community,” which was published in Library Technology Reports (vol. 48, no. 8) in November of 2012. The chapter reports the results of an original research study that investigated the curricular use of the iPad 2 at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Janet Carleton, digital initiatives coordinator, presented the opening remarks and spoke about OHIO’s first female graduate, Maggie Boyd at the Celebrate Women Conference at the Ohio University Pickerington Center on March 22, 2013. Carleton is also a regional representative for the National Digital Newspaper Program in Ohio.

As chair of the ALA International Relations Committee, Africa sub-committee, Araba Dawson-Andoh, Africana librarian, will present at the African Library Summit this summer in Pretoria, South Africa. Dawson-Andoh received a competitive Bogle Pratt International Travel Award to attend this event.

Chris Guder, reference and instruction librarian, received his Ph.D. in Instructional Technology from Ohio University after completing his dissertation titled

“Exploring the Relationship between Patron Type, Carnegie Classification, and Satisfaction with Library Services: An Analysis of LibQUAL+® Results”. In October 2012, his article “Making Libraries Accessible: Adaptive Design and Assistive Technology” was published in Library Technology Reports (vol. 48, no. 7). The article familiarizes readers with the range and categories of assistive technologies that are available to help users make informed and purposeful decisions about what to provide at organizations.

Derek Malone, senior library associate

Derek Malone, senior library associate, received his Master of Library and Information Science from Kent State University. He attended the 2013 ILLiad International Conference, which took place March 19-21, where he presented text message adaptation and communication strategies within Interlibrary Loan. Malone also serves on the executive board of the Academic Library Association of Ohio (ALAO).

Inside the Libraries:
In the summer of 2012, all of the desktop PCs on the second floor of Alden were replaced and book scanners were added to every floor in Alden Library, with two on the second floor, as well as one in the Music/Dance Library and one in the Libraries’ Annex. These improvements were made in response to the concerns raised in the 2012 LibQUAL+ survey submitted by the Ohio University community.
