Dard Hunter![]() American writer Dard Hunter (1883-1966) is as much known for is writing as he is for his fascination with the making of books. Hunter’s great-grandfather, grandfather, and father all dabbled in the world of printing offices and newspapers. His grandfather started a printing office in 1812, and his grandfather and father “owned and edited newspapers.” Hunter was the papermaker, typefounder, typesetter, printer, and writer for eight Mountain House Press books. Hunter fostered his fascination with papermaking by traveling to countries in the 1920s and 1930s where paper was made by hand, such as Japan, Korea, India, and China, among others. Hunter was awarded the Gold Medal from the American Institute of Graphic Arts in 1931, the Ohioana Medal in 1944, and honorary degrees from Lawrence College, Ohio State University, Wooster College, and Lehigh University.
