Arthur Machen![]() British writer Arthur Machen (1863-1947) was born Arthur Lllewellyn Jones. Machen grew up an only child in rural Wales. When Machen’s parents died, Machen went to London, where, after pursing a college education and future as a surgeon, Machen began to write. Machen has been deemed “a seminal figure in the fields of horror and fantastic literature.” Machen wrote The Chornicle of Clemendy, The Great God Pan and the Inmost Light, The Three Impostors, Tales of Horror and the Supernatural, The Children of the Pool and Other Stories, and The Cosy Room and Other Stories. Machen is also known for “The Bowmen” and his story “The White People,” which is featured in The House of Souls. Contemporary Authors Online, Gale, 2004. Reproduced in Biography Resource Center.
