Jesse Stuart

American writer Jesse Stuart (1906-1984) drew from his Appalachian upbringing in order to share with the United States the Appalachian lifestyle and its relationship to the rest of the country.

Stuart’s life began in a one-room log cabin in Kentucky. His youth was spent working on his family’s farm and struggling through high school. Stuarts' efforts, however, paid off; he graduated from Lincoln Memorial University in 1929.

Stuart once said he wrote approximately 30,000 words a day. His works include Head o' W-Hollow, Trees of Heaven, Men of the Mountains, Stories by Jesse Stuart, 32 Votes before Breakfast, and poetry, including Harvest of Youth, Album of Destiny, Hold April. Also, Stuart had what he estimated to be 59 or 69 stories published in Esquire magazine.
