Dard Hunter was with the Roycrofters of East Aurora, New York from 1904-1910. Roycrofters is named for the 17th Century printers, Thomas and Samuel Roycroft. The Roycroft colony included several workshops for glass, metal, leather, and cabinet making, plus a bindery and a print shop. Hunter was one of three major designers with the Roycrofters and became the art director in 1908.
The Roycrofters were a leading proponent of America's Arts and Crafts Movement that believed that a hand-crafted object was inherently more desirable, beautiful, serviceable, and worthy of human endeavor than anything made by a machine. While at the Roycrofters, Dard Hunter designed over 200 books. These publications provide a record of how his style evolved and the various influences to which he was exposed.
