BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH OF THE COLLECTION

Thomas Knauss, Charles Cable, Webb Poston, A.H. Carnes, and C.E. Poston incorporated the Nelsonville Foundry and Machine Company on April 4, 1881; and hired John W. Jackson as manager. It manufactured mining equipment and machinery, and was a major distributor throughout Ohio and the Midwest. The company played a major part in the Hocking Valley region during the era when coal mining was at its peak. By 1950 the company had scaled back its operations due to the decrease in mining. In 1963 the company's property was sold by the Jackson family to R.V. Oakley (owner of Sunnyville Coal Mines) and David Neiman.

Bibliography: Information was obtained from:
'Coal Mines Once Kept Nelsonville Foundry Busy,' The Athens Messenger, July 14, 1963, p.15. Bush, Fred W. Centennial Atlas of Athens County, Athens: Centennial Atlas Association, 1905, p.87.
