Provenance: The Ohio University Libraries received the Stanley Mechem Collection through a donation from his daughter, Mrs. Alice Drach in February 1997. Heather B. Mullins processed the collection in Winter 1997.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH OF THE COLLECTION
C(harles) Stanley Mechem was born in Nelsonville, Ohio January 29, 1893. Following service in the U.S. Army during World War I he joined the family business, a dry goods store in Nelsonville and shoe store in Athens.
Stanley Mechem was elected to the Ohio Senate in 1942 and served 11 consecutive terms from 1943 - 1965. He was elected President Pro- tem of the Senate in 1953 and continued as the ranking Republican leader from them until his retirement from the Senate. He died on July 6, 1989.
SCOPE AND CONTENTS OF THE COLLECTION
The Stanley Mechem Collection consists of seven scrapbooks. These scrapbooks contain a variety of items, primarily newspaper articles, photographs, letters, etc. documenting his legislative service and interests. There are personal articles about Mechem and his life and family. There are also numerous articles about various legislation between 1951-1964. Many of the different bills during this time are documented at great length.
