Information about the Alden Library "Appointment with a Librarian"
- Who may use this service?
- This service is intended for the students, faculty, and staff of Ohio
University.
- Who will receive my question?
- Your question will go to the Reference Department in Alden Library and
then be referred to the appropriate subject librarian.
- What will the librarian do for me during our appointment?
- We will try to answer your questions! Our approach will be to show you
which resources and databases to use, and teach you how to use them. It
is not our intention that you will complete your research during our
time together, but that you will learn the skills to then go home and
finish.
- What kinds of questions are appropriate?
- This service is meant for extended research consultations. Some examples
include:
- I have looked in all the usual places, where else might I look?
- I need to get a road map of how to handle this research project.
- I want to learn to use databases in my field.
- What questions are not appropriate?
- Short ans'wer questions can be addressed through our other "Ask"
services: e-mail, in-person, chat, etc. If you are in doubt, begin by
asking at the desk, and we will refer you if necessary.
- How fast will I get an appointment?
- We will forward your request to the appropriate librarian within 24
hours. That librarian will e-mail you to make an appointment in another
48 hours. This means that if you have a due date for your paper, you
will need to plan at least 5 business days ahead in order to see your
librarian and still have time to do the research. If you do not have
that much time, ask us via IM, e-mail, phone, or in-person in the library.
