Search Engines

Google is an example of a search engine.

Google page

When you enter your search in a search engine, it searches within its own database of web pages for the keywords you enter, wherever they appear on a Web page.

Note that Google automatically inserts AND between terms.

Other search engines include:  Excite, HotBot, and Alta Vista

Search engines are great for finding specific terms or phrases or locating information about well-known entities, such as IBM or government agencies, or reading about current news stories or locating information about traveling and shopping services.

Search engines are generally not good for academic research, because they generally pull up any webpage that might have something to say about a given topic ... you won't necessarily know if that page is up to snuff for research at the college level.
