The Children's Collection, which includes approximately 20,000 volumes, is primarily designed to serve students and faculty in the fields of early childhood, elementary, and secondary education. Books of fiction in the collection are suitable for all ages from infants to high school age students. Non-fiction books serve preschool through middle school age students. Books are primarily in the English language, but a small portion of the books are in other languages. The Collection includes all of the Caldecott and Newbery award-winning books and many of the Caldecott and Newbery honor books. The collection does not include textbooks for children or young adults.

A Children's Historical Collection of 1,400 volumes is located in the Archives and Special Collections Department.

Using ALICE to find Children's Books

All of the books in the Children's Collection are included in ALICE and can be searched by all of the normal searching techniques including author, title, subject, keyword, and call number. Be sure to note the exact location when taking down the call number, i.e. Alden 4th Floor Children's Ref., Alden 4th Floor Children's Awards, Alden 4th Floor Children's Audio, or Alden 4th Children's Picture.

To find books of nonfiction on a particular topic, do a subject search. To find books of fiction or nonfiction on a particular topic, do a keyword search rather than a subject search.

When doing a subject or a keyword search, it is usually helpful to limit your search to the Children's Collection. To do this:
