Kilvert Community

There is an anonymous web page that gives some historical background on Kilvert. The page is part of Countdown to Millennium, a local oral history project begun in 1998.
There are some materials in Archives & Special Collections, for example:
Thirteen Stars: The Story of Federal Crick
There are also a few other print materials in this collection, Alden 5th Fl Archives Ohioana.
For the last few years, David M. Lucas, Associate Professor at the Ohio University Southern Campus, has guided a student research project on the Blackfork and Poke Patch communities in Lawrence and Gallia Counties. These two communities, once part of the Underground Railroad, are very similar to Kilvert in that they are composed of Native Americans, African Americans, and Caucasians living in “an unusual relationship of peaceful coexistence while social torment swirled around them for decades” (David Lucas).
There are two websites on this research project that are well worth visiting: The Blackfork Story, which presents the results of the students’ research, and The International Institute of Folknography, which describes the background to the project.
