Ohio History

The Ohio Historical Society is a great place to start learning about Ohio history.  Especially useful is their list of information about historic sites by name and by topic.

Another great site to visit is the Ohio Memory Project.  It has primary sources (things like photographs, letters, documents, and artifacts) on all eras of Ohio history.  You can search for something specific or browse in a wide variety of ways.

For research not only in Ohio history, but for any aspect of American history, the major database is America: History and Life.

  1. I’m hoping someone can help me overcome a brick wall in my genealogical effort. I’m currently attending the University of Washington to earn a certificate in Genealogy. I’ve selected Thomas (Tomas) F. Weaver and his family as my project for the program.
Thomas Weaver was born April 1853 in North Carolina. By 1870 he was working on a riverboat and is listed as a boarder in Lawrence County, OH. He married Willie L. Cooper in Albany Village, Athens County, Ohio in 1883. By 1900 they had 7 children, 6 that survived. Willie died in 1902, and Thomas took the children to California.
Willie Cooper’s parents were Calvin Douglas Cooper and Nancy Cassel(ls) both born in Virginia. Nancy’s parents were Thomas James Cassell and Frances Woodson. I understand the Woodson family is quite well known in the area.
I hope someone can assist me with finding Thomas Weaver’s parents and birth place. I talked to his daughter back in the 1980s and she thought her father had changed his name when he came to Ohio so I’m not discounting and male/black/mulatoo from North carolina in the 1870 and 1860 census.
If you can send email addresses and/or thelphone numbers of people who might be able to assist me in searching out this information, I would real appreciate it.
    Than you for your assitance.
    Jeannette
