Finding the Full Text of Articles

Full-Text Links

Many article databases will provide links to online full-text of articles, often labeled either HTML Full Text or PDF Full Text. Following these links should lead straight to the article you need.

Olinks

At other times these same databases will display this "Find It" icon: Icon for linking to full text online Clicking on this icon leads to Olinks, a service from OhioLINK which can often—though not always—lead to either the online version of an article or the printed one or both.

Olinks screenThe "Full text link" in this example should lead to the complete text of the article, in this case at OhioLINK's Electronic Journal Center (EJC).

The "Copies in your library" box, beneath the "Full text link," shows a summary of our "holdings" (volumes owned and their locations).

Olinks screenScrolling down the "Copies in your library" box will reveal a clickable link to our library catalog, ALICE. Following this link and looking at the ALICE page(s) for the journal will often give more complete information than this box itself contains.

For more on finding journals in ALICE, see below.

Using ALICE to Find Periodicals

Sometime there simply are no links to either online articles or to ALICE records for magazines, journals, or newspapers. This can happen when...

  • you are using an online source that doesn't provide such links, or
  • you are not online at all; perhaps you've found a reference to an article you need in a book, another article, a course syllabus, etc.

If this is the case, you should first record the complete citation information for the article:

  1. author of the article
  2. title of the article
  3. title of the periodical in which the article was published
  4. volume and issue numbers of the article
  5. date of publication
  6. pages

Then, do a periodical title search in ALICE for the title of the periodical (#3 above), not the title of the article or its author. Here's an example of a somewhat complicated ALICE page for a periodical:

Periodical holdings screen in ALICEt
  1. The first two lines in this section of the record show the location and call number for those volumes of Time magazine which are bound in hard covers, given a call number and shelved with the books, in this case on the 6th floor.
  2. The next two lines give the location for the most recent issues of the magazine, along with the date of the most recent issue available. If you click on the Latest Received link, you will see a listing of each individual issue in this location.
  3. This section indicates the volumes which are kept in the Library Annex, an off-campus storage facility for older, less-used volumes. You can use ALICE to request that volumes from the Annex be brought back to Alden Library for your use.
  4. This section indicates those volumes which are in microfilm. Staff in Alden Library's Microforms Collection can help you find the microfilm you need and use the viewing and printing equipment.
  5. This series of entries list each hardbound volume of Time magazine individually, along with their location.
