How do I Find Articles from The New York Times?

The New York Times is available from many sources, not least including the daily paper copy available at the Circulation Desk on the 4th floor of Alden Library. The graph below summarizes the sources for articles from the New York Times; see the notes below it for more information about using these sources.

Paper copies of the New York Times are available on the 4th floor of Alden Library; current to the past few months: ask for them at the Circulation Desk.

America's Newspapers
Access: Ohio U. - all campuses (including off-campus access)
Full-text: yes (HTML text only; no graphics)
Coverage: comprehensive, from 2000 to the present
How to Search:
  1. On main page look for "search shortcuts" (upper left part of page) and choose "New York Times"
  2. Use "narrow to" and select the exact title.
  3. Do a traditional search or use the excellent "browse" feature by clicking the link to the publication title. Allows you to select a date and browse by section, i.e. society desk, real estate, classified, foreign desk and many more.

LexisNexis Academic
Access: Ohio U. - all campuses (including off-campus access)
Full-text: yes (HTML text only; no graphics)
Coverage: comprehensive from June 1, 1980-present ; January 1, 1969 - May 31, 1980 (abstracts only)
How to Search:
  1. To limit your search to the New York Times, first click on the "Sources" tab near the top of the screen.
  2. Then, on the right, type "New York Times" in the "Find a Source" box and press the "Go" button.
  3. Check the box that says only "The New York Times" with nothing else added.
  4. Then click on the red "OK - Continue" button on the right side of the screen.
  5. You will return to the Power Search screen, where you can enter your search term(s), with "The New York Times" listed as the source you are searching.

Factiva
Access: Ohio U. - Athens campus only (including off-campus access)
Full-text: yes (HTML text only; no graphics)
Coverage: from June 1, 1980 to the present; updated daily
How to Search:
  1. The most recent two weeks can be easily found and browsed under the "News Pages" tab.
  2. For earlier articles, click on "Source" in the main search box and search for "New York Times."
  3. Then enter your search terms in the "Free Text" search box and click on the "Run Search" button.
  4. Articles from the News York Times Magazine section are accessible by searching "SC=NYTF and SE=Magazine".

ProQuest Newspapers
Access: Ohio U. - Athens campus only (including off-campus access)
Full-text: yes (HTML text only; no graphics)
Coverage: 1980 to the present
How to Search: Since this database includes several other newspapers, you must specify "New York Times" as the "Publication Title" in one of the search boxes in order to limit your search results to the New York Times only.

Academic Search Complete
Access: Ohio U. - all campuses (including off-campus access)
Full-text: abstracts only; for full-text, follow the "FindIt!" link to New York Times Select (see below)
Coverage: January 1, 1989 to the present
How to Search:
  1. To limit your search to The New York Times , type "new york times " in one of the search boxes.
  2. On the popup menu to the right of the box, change "Select a Field (optional)" to "SO Journal Name."
  3. Enter your search terms in the other box(es) and click on the "Search" button. Note: the search only covers words in the database record, not the full-text of the article.

New York Times Archive
Access: Free for most articles (see below)
Full-text: Yes (HTML text, 1981 to the present; PDF page images are also available from 1851-1980--see below for details.)
Coverage: Varies by date:
  • All content from 1987 to the present is free.
  • For 1923 - 1986, some will be free and the rest are fee-based. The stories not available from the New York Times website should be available through the Historical New York Times database (see below).
  • All content from 1851 to 1922 is free
How to Search:
  1. In the search box at the top of the front page, type your search term(s).
  2. Choose either "NYT Archive Since 1981" or "NYT Archive 1851-1980."
  3. Click the Search button.

Historical New York Times
Access: Ohio U. - Athens campus only (including off-campus access)
Full-text: Yes (PDF images of pages)
Coverage: 1851 - 2003
How to Search: Enter terms in one or more search boxes. Records include both abstracts and PDF page images.

New York Times on Microfilm
Access: Microforms Collection on 1st floor of Alden Library
Full-text: Yes, articles can be printed or scanned using equipment in the Microforms Collection; for help, ask at the 1st floor service desk.
Coverage: 1851 - 2005
How to Search:
  1. Use The New York Times Index print edition (covering 1913 - 2005) to locate the date, sections, and pages of the desired articles.
  2. Load the appropriate reels of microfilm on the viewing equipment and browse the microfilm until you find the articles.
  3. For older articles, you need to determine the approximate date of the story you're seeking, then browse those dates of the microfilms.
