and ISI Databases
These instructions assume that you have searched an ISI database and found some results that you wish to import into RefWorks.
Exporting References from an ISI database
- At the General Search Results - Summary page, mark the records you want to import by clicking on the boxes next to the references.
- Click SUBMIT MARKS.
Your screen will refresh and a new button, MARKED LIST, will appear on the top menu.
- In the top menu, click MARKED LIST.
The Web of Science Marked Records window will appear.
- Select the fields to include in addition to citation information (author, article title, source (journal title, date, volume, issue and pagination) by clicking the boxes next to the fields. We strongly recommend including the abstract and keywords. If you are importing a book or book chapter, you may want to include publisher information.
- Click SAVE TO FILE.
The File Download window will appear.
- Note the name of the file you are downloading, savedrecs.txt.
- Click Save.
The Save As window will open.
- Note the name of the file you are saving, savedrecs.txt.
- Note where you are saving the file.
- Click Save.
The Download Complete window will open.
- You will get a Download Complete confirmation.
- Note the name of the file you downloaded, savedrecs.txt.
- Click Close.
Importing References into RefWorks
Go to RefWorks at www.refworks.com. At the RefWorks login page:
- Enter your login name
- Enter your password
- Click Login
If you need to create a new account for RefWorks, click on the link immediately above the space for your login name. See also our separate instructions on RefWorks accounts.
Please note: Ignore the link that says "Athens Users"; it has nothing whatsoever to do with Ohio University!
- At the Getting Started page, click References in the top menu.
- Then click Import in the dropdown menu.
- Click the down arrow in the Import Filter/Data Source drop-down box and select the Ohio University import filter. Your screen will refresh.
- Click the down arrow in the Database drop-down box and select Web of Science.
- Click the Browse button adjacent to the Import Data from the following Text File textbox.
In the Choose File window:
- Click the savedrecs.txt file.
- Click Open.
At the RefWorks Import page:
- Note that the path and savedrecs.txt file display in the Import Data textbox.
- Click the Import button at the bottom of the page.
The RefWorks Import page will open
- RefWorks will prompt with Import completed when it is finished.
- Click View Last Imported Folder to view your references.
- RefWorks will display references in the Last Imported Folder window.
- For information about searching and sorting your citations or about creating and organizing folders click the RefWorks HELP link.
- Click the OLinks icon to see if an article is available in full-text, print or microform format and to submit an interlibrary loan request.
