These instructions assume that you have searched PubMed and found some results that you wish to import into RefWorks.
Exporting References from PubMed
- On the search results screen, check the little box for each reference you want to import.
- Change the option for the Display popup menu from Summary to MEDLINE.
Your screen will refresh, displaying the references you saved (see below).
- Change the option in the Send to popup menu to Text.
Your screen will refresh, displaying only the text, without the rest of the browser window.
Go to your browser's File menu and choose Save as...
- Choose a filename and location for your saved references.
- Be sure to save it in Text format, and not Web or HTML format.
- Click on the Save button.
The exporting part of the process is now complete. Now you will need to import your data into RefWorks.
Importing References into RefWorks
Go to RefWorks at www.refworks.com. At the RefWorks login page:
- Enter your Log-in name
- Enter your Password
- Click Login
On the RefWorks Import page click on the References drop-down menu:
- In the Import Filter/Data Source dropdown box, select NLM PubMed. In the Database dropdown box, select PubMed.
- Click the Browse button adjacent to the Import Data from the following Text File box until you locate the file on your computer.
- Click on the Import button.
- After you have logged in, the RefWorks Import page will open.
- Click View Last Imported Folder to view your references.
- RefWorks will display references in the Last Imported Folder window.
- For information about searching and sorting your citations or about creating and organizing folders, click the RefWorks Help link.
- These three options will let you:
- View the complete citation as it has been imported into RefWorks
- Edit the citation
- Click on the OLinks icon to go to a link that will allow yo to open the full text of the article.
