These instructions assume that you have searched a SilverPlatter database and found some results that you wish to import into RefWorks.

Exporting References from a SilverPlatter database

  1. At the Search Results page, mark the records you want to import by clicking on the boxes next to the references.
  2. Click on the floppy disk icon to save the records.
  1. Under Save these records, select Marked records.
  2. Under Save these fields, select Citation and Abstract.
  3. Click Save.

The File Download window will appear.

  1. Note the name of the file you are downloading, download.dat
  2. Select Save to Disk.
  3. Click OK.

The Save As window will open.

  1. Note the name of the file you are saving, download.dat
  2. Note where you are saving the file.
  3. Click Save.

Importing References into RefWorks

Go to RefWorks at www.refworks.com. At the RefWorks login page:

  1. Enter your login name
  2. Enter your password
  3. Click Login

If you need to create a new account for RefWorks, click on the link immediately above the space for you login name. See also our separate instructions on RefWorks accounts.

Please note: Ignore the link that says "Athens Users"; it has nothing whatsoever to do with Ohio University!

  1. At the Getting Started page, click References in the top menu.
  2. Then click Import in the dropdown menu.

  1. Click the down arrow in the Import Filter/Data Source drop-down box and select the SilverPlatter WebSPIRS import filter. Your screen will refresh.
  2. PreMedline on Silver Platter will appear in the Database drop-down box.
  3. Click the Browse button adjacent to the Import Data from the following Text File textbox.

In the Choose File window:

  1. Click the download.dat file.
  2. Click Open.

Note: If you are using a library computer, which will not allow you to save on the desktop, or have your own computer set to save files somewhere other than the desktop, be sure to retrieve your file from the specific location you've chosen. Library computer users may store their files under Temporary Storage (D:).

At the RefWorks Import page:

  1. Note that the path and download.dat file display in the Import Data textbox.
  2. Click the Import button at the bottom of the page.

The RefWorks Import page will open

  1. RefWorks will prompt with Import completed when it is finished.
  2. Click View Last Imported Folder to view your references.
  1. RefWorks will display references in the Last Imported Folder window.
  2. For information about searching and sorting your citations or about creating and organizing folders click the RefWorks HELP link.
  3. Click the OLinks icon to see if an article is available in full-text, print or microform format and to submit an interlibrary loan request.
