RefWorks logo and Wilson Databases

These instructions assume that you have searched a Wilson database and found some results that you wish to import into RefWorks.

Exporting References from a Wilson database

  1. At the Results page, mark the records you want to import by clicking on the boxes next to the references.
  2. Click Get Marked.
  1. Click Print Email Save.
  1. Click Save Options.
  1. Next to Fields, select FULL TEXT & images included, if available.
  2. Next to Format, select Format for exporting to Bibliographic Software.
  3. Click Save.
  1. A new window with plain text will appear.
  1. Click File on the menu bar.
  2. Then click Save Page As in the drop-down menu.

The Save Web Page window will open.

  1. Note where you are saving the file.
  2. Note the name of the file you are saving. We renamed the file to be called wilson
  3. Click the down arrow in the Save as type select box and click Text File (*.txt).
  4. Click the Save button.

Importing References into RefWorks

Go to RefWorks at www.refworks.com. At the RefWorks login page:

  1. Enter your login name.
  2. Enter your password.
  3. Click Login.

If you need to create a new account for RefWorks, click on the link immediately above the space for you login name. See also our separate instructions on RefWorks accounts.

Please note: Ignore the link that says "Athens Users"; it has nothing whatsoever to do with Ohio University!

  1. Click References in the top menu.
  2. Then click Import in the drop-down menu.

On the RefWorks Import page:

  1. Click the down arrow in the Import Filter/Data Source select box and click the H.W. Wilson from the drop-down list.
  2. Click the down arrow in the Database select box and click All Databases from the drop-down list.
  3. Click the Browse button adjacent to the Import Data from the following Text File textbox.

In the Choose File window:

  1. Make sure you are in the location where you saved the wilson.txt file.
  2. Click the wilson.txt file.
  3. The wilson.txt file will appear in the File name textbox.
  4. Click the Open button.

At the RefWorks Import page:

  1. The path and wilson.txt file display in the Import Data textbox.
  2. Click the Import button at the bottom of the page.

The RefWorks Import page will open.

  1. RefWorks will prompt with Import completed when it is finished.
  2. Click View Last Imported Folder to view your references.
  1. RefWorks will display your reference in the Last Imported Folder window.
  2. For information about searching and sorting your citations or about creating and organizing folders click the RefWorks HELP link.
  3. Click the OLinks icon to see if an article is available in full-text, print or microform format and to submit an interlibrary loan request.
