Iconography Sources

Picture of iconIconography is the study of subjects and symbols in art. The following guide dealing with mythological, religious and secular subjects is meant to serve as an introduction to western iconography. Some of the sources listed below were selected to provide general information about subjects ranging from the Labors of Heracles to the Seven Virtues. Other sources were selected to provide an overview of how a particular subject or theme has been represented in the arts over the years. Finally, there are sources that identify individual saints by attribute or gesture and explain the significance of various objects incorporated into a work of art. This subject guide includes only user-friendly English language sources. Please consult the Fine Arts Library staff if you do not find the information you need.
