Bibliography on Michelangelo

Detail of David by MichelangeloThis bibliography was originally compiled for the Tier III Michelangelo course—it is not a bibliography of scholarly works by and about Michelangelo. It is an attempt to introduce students who are not familiar with the literature of art history to basic indexes and reference sources used by art historians. It also introduces students to a number of videos, websites and other secondary sources that may be of use in courses that focus on Michelangelo.

Basic Reference Sources

BHA: Bibliography of the History of Art, 1991-
Available in its most complete form from RLG, the Bibliography of the History of Art is the most comprehensive art bibliography available worldwide, covering European and American visual arts from late antiquity to the present. This database indexes and abstracts art-related books, conference proceedings and dissertations, exhibition and dealers' catalogs, and articles from over 4,300 periodicals.

Art Abstracts, 1929- . Wilson.
Call number: N 30 A78
Art Astracts may lead you to older materials not indexed in BHA. It is, however, limited to only the articles in a set list of about 220 periodicals and does not contain the wealth of scholarly sources found in BHA. Link from InfoTree/Arts. Abstracts only, not full text.

Michelangelo-Bibliographie, 1927-1970. Luitpold Dussler, ed. Wiesbaden, 1974.
Call number: Z8572 D8 1974. Fine Arts Reference
Entries listed by author. Notations in German, but many of the works cited are not in German. Accessible through lists of works, locations of works, etc. at the back of the volume.

Call number: N5300 S923 2002 Fine Arts Reserve
A standard work; useful introductory text and an attractive format. Vol. 2, chapter 17 provides good renaissance coverage.

The article on Michelangelo in Volume 21 provides an excellent overview of Michelangelo and his sculpture and architecture in particular.
The index volume is a bit convoluted, (For the Sistine Chapel, check the second column of page 827.) Bibliographies are excellent. Help is available at the Fine Arts service desk.

Encyclopedia of World Art (EWA)

Introduction to the Florence Michelangelo knew. A good investment of 55 minutes and a lot cheaper and more informative than a one day trip to Florence.

Vatican Museums.

This site is maintained by the Vatican and offers good details of the Sistine Chapel. Click on Sistine Chapel.

Useful, but clearly NOT for looking....

Michelangelo, Selected Scholarship in English. William Wallace ,ed.
Call number: Arts N 6923 B9 M553
This is a five-volume set of essays and articles about Michelangelo. All were previously published elsewhere. It is a useful collection, but the reproductions are extremely poor. Many articles have been reduced to fit on smaller pages. You might wish to look at the articles as they first appeared rather than cope with tiny type and really poor illustrations. The original sources are listed in the back of each volume. You will find we have most of the titles listed.
