Call Number: E464 .C5 1996x   Location: Government Documents Service Desk

This disk includes:

1) The War of The Rebellion: A Compilation of The Official Records of The Union and Confederate Armies

All 127 print volumes are included on the CD with new, greatly expanded indexing. These books are the definitive reference source for the original battle reports and correspondence of the Civil War. The Army records are broken into 4 major series:
  • Series I, containing 53 volumes, contain the battle reports for both the Union and Confederate armies.
  • Series II, containing 8 volumes, are the Union and Confederate correspondence, orders, reports, and returns, relating to Prisoners of War and to state or political prisoners associated with the military.
  • Series III, containing 5 volumes, contains Union correspondence, orders, reports, and returns not included in the first and second series, such as the annual and special reports of the Secretary of War, of the General-in-Chief, etc. It also includes calls for troops and the correspondence between National and State authorities.
  • Series IV, containing 3 volumes, contains Confederate correspondence, orders, reports, and returns, as with Series III, but excluding correspondence between Union and Confederate authorities in that series.

2) A Compendium of the War of the Rebellion, by Frederick H. Dyer

This monumental 3 volume work contains mostly Union regimental information.

3) Regimental Losses in the American Civil War (1861-1865)

Almost 600 pages packed with statistics of Union regiments and some Confederate statistics as well.

4) Military Operations of the Civil War: A Guide Index to the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies

Almost 1,000 pages of a huge re-indexing effort of the OFFICIAL RECORDS done at the National Archives in the 1960's and 1970's. The result is 5 volumes of index information, covering the war by theatres of operation and by state, and cross-referencing the Army and Navy records. The CD includes tens of thousands of hypertext jumps from the GUIDE INDEX to the actual referenced Army Official Records. Volumes include:
  • Volume 1: Conspectus, Sections A-K. A high level overview of operations and the remaining volumes.
  • Volume 2: Main Eastern Theatre of Operations.
  • Volume 3: Lower Seabord Theater of Operations and Gulf Approach (1861-63)
  • Volume 4: Main Western Theater of Operations except Gulf Approach (1861-63)
  • Volume 5: Trans-Mississippi and Pacific Coast Theater of Operations

5) A User's Guide to the Official Records of the American Civil War, by Alan and Barbara Aimone

An overview of the history and significance of the OFFICIAL RECORDS.
