Other Material of Interest to Genealogists in the Government Documents DepartmentCIVILIAN PERSONNEL RECORDSStarting in 1816, the OFFICAL REGISTER was published. These volumes, depending on the year, list employees of Congress and all the departments and agencies of the U.S. Government. The title page states it includes "officials and agents civil, military and naval in the service of the United States." Name, where employed, where born, salary, etc. are listed by agency. Call Number: CLAIMS RECORDSMany series of claims records are arranged numerically but are accompanied by indexes to the names of the claimants. A few of these indexes that may be of special use to the genealogist are mentioned below. Lists of private claims brought before the Senate and the House were printed as Congressional documents. Each list is arranged alphabetically by name of claimant and shows the nature or object of the claims, the Congress and session before which it was brought, and the nature and number or date of the report. The following tabulation shows the coverage of each list and the citation to the Congressional document. Senate, 14th to 46th Congresses (1815-81), S.Misc. Doc. 14, Senate, 47th to 51st Congresses (1881-91),S.Misc. Doc. 266, House, 1st to 31st Congresses (1789-1851), H.Misc. Doc. House, 42d to 46th Congresses (1871-81), H.Misc. Doc. 53, House, 47th to 51st Congresses (1881-91), H.Misc. Doc. 213, U.S. COMMISSIONERS OF CLAIMSClaims were reported by the Commissioners of Claims to the House of Representatives from 1871 to 1880. These give the name of each claimant before the commission usually known as the Southern Claims Commission for "stores or supplies taken or furnished during the rebellion for the use of the army of the United States in States proclaimed as in insurrection against the United States," State of residence, the claim number, and the action on each claim. Arranged alphabetically by name of claimant. Ten general reports by year are in Govt. Docs. Serial Set. See index in CHECKLIST OF UNITED STATES PUBLIC DOCUMENTS 1789-1909, page 1511 for each year's Serial Set volume. DAR ANNUAL REPORTSStarting with the 1890, these were published as Senate Documents, according to law. The information varies depending on the year. There are lists of Revolutionary Soldiers by state, cemetery lists of soldiers buried therein, civil war soldiers, recent members and lineage, work of local chapters, etc. The earlier years' reports seem to have more of this information, and the reports gradually evolve into business reports. LIBRARY OF CONGRESSGENEALOGIES CATALOGUED BY THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS is a list of established 'forms' of family names. Included is a list of genealogies converted to microfilm.
