Brief Remark: An unusual number of changes occurring in the
Indonesian press world lately. What this particular shakeup means
is not yet clear.

PELITA HAS NEW BOARD OF MANAGEMENT

Pelita, a Jakarta newspaper which caters to Moslem readers,
appeared under new editorial management yesterday led by chief
editor H. Azkarmin Zaini, former secretary of daily Kompas'
editorial board, who has been appointed one of the deputy
publishers.
The 16 year old newspaper which reflects the thinking of the
ruling Golkar party [after the newspaper was weakened by a
temporary ban and then more or less involuntarily bought out] also
has a new deputy chief editor and a new editorial assistant. They
are Purnama Kusumaningrat, former staff editor of Kompas and
Syu'bah Asa, long time staff editor of Tempo weekly, who several
years ago quit the magazine to work for [indeed, found] another
weekly [Editor, from which he soon resigned, after which Editor's
initial Muslim slant vanished].
Pelita also has a new business manager, Fadel Muhammad,
president of Bukaka company. However, the publisher remains Abdul
Gafur, former minister of sports and youth affairs. The former
deputy publisher, Aburizal Bakrie, owner of the Bakrie group of
companies, retains his post. Also remaining active is the paper's
advisor, Sudharmono, the republic's vice president.
Pelita said in an editorial yesterday that the paper had
undergone a total shakeup which covered the editorial boad, the
management, and the concept of the paper. The editorial hoped
that Pelita would be a "different newspaper."
Yesterday Pelita placed color advertisements in other
newspapers.
