University Libraries (Athens Campus) Chronology

1814 First set of rules and regulations passed by the Trustees
1830s Accounts by travelers estimate a library with 2000-3000 volumes. 'University of Ohio' receives a multi-volume set of historical documents 'to be perpetually preserved in the library' from the British Public Records Commission
1880s University library and libraries of two literary societies consolidated
1886 Library designated an official federal depository for government documents
1900 Library has 15,000 volumes
1905 Carnegie Library (now Scripps Hall) opens, for university and Athens community. Charles G. Matthews appointed first full-time University Librarian
1925 Ann Keating named Librarian
1931 Edwin Watts Chubb Library (now Chubb Hall) opens (with approximately 75,000 volumes)
1949 Frank N. Jones named Librarian
1957 Walter W. Wright named Librarian
1968 Thompson M. Little named Director of the Library
1969 Vernon R. Alden Library opens (with some 550,000 volumes)
1971 Library staff enters first record into OCLC (originally Ohio College Library Center, now Online Computer Library Center) database
1972 East and West Wings of Alden Library open
1976 William F. Rogers named Acting Director
1978 Hwa-Wei Lee named Director of Libraries
1979 Libraries reach 1 millionth volume mark. Friends of the Libraries of Ohio University founded. First major endowed fund established. International internship program established
1983 Libraries adopt online catalog (Alice) system. Libraries surpass 1 million units of microfilm
1987 Libraries install first CD-ROM service. Libraries named official US depository for Malaysian government documents
1990 Libraries named official US depository for documents from Botswana
1991 Libraries surpass 1.5 million volumes. Libraries named official US depository for documents from Swaziland
1992 Libraries become first user of OCLC's PRISM service
1993 Libraries surpass 2 million units of microfilm. Library staff enters record number 29,000,000 into OCLC database. Libraries acquire Columbus Road building for Library Annex (remote storage facility)
1995 Libraries link fully with the OhioLINK system. Libraries system reaches 2 million volume mark
1996 Libraries system becomes a member of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL)
1997 Libraries named official North American depository for documents from Guatemala
1998 Library Annex on Columbus Road opens for service
1999 Julia Zimmerman named Dean of the Libraries. Annex renamed Hwa-Wei Lee Library Annex
2000 President Emeritus Vernon Alden announces a major gift commitment of $5 million
2002 Robert E. and Jean R. Mahn announce a major gift and the former Archives & Special Collections Department is renamed the Robert E. and Jean R. Mahn Center for Archives & Special Collections
2004 Libraries create the Learning Commons through a renovation of the second floor of Alden Library.
2007 Dean Julia Zimmerman takes a position elsewhere; Jan Maxwell named as interim Dean.
2008 Scott Seaman named as new Dean of Libraries.
