Course-Related InstructionAll professional librarians serve as bibliographers for one or more fields of study and are available to present seminars on advanced research sources for graduate and upper-division classes. They can acquaint students with both electronic and printed resources, and research methods for their fields. For the name of the bibliographer for your department, see our list of subject bibliographers and departmental library representatives. We strongly recommend that faculty members contact librarians well in advance of the date of the instruction session(s), so that both the librarian and a teaching lab will be available. We also strongly urge that the instructional session(s) be closely integrated with a research project in the course; instructional sessions without this context tend to be ineffective. See our page of ideas for creative research assignments. Library assignments can become frustrating to students if the materials are not available when needed or if the assignments are poorly designed or out of date. Librarians are happy to work with faculty in devising assignments that will best meet the needs of a particular course and, at the same time, most fruitfully exploit the Library's resources.
