Course-Related Instruction
- Can a librarian teach my class to do research?
- Yes! Teaching students to master the resources of the field is a very important part of the work of a "bibliographer" (subject specialist librarian). All you have to do is contact your bibliographer or Lorraine Wochna to begin discussing how we can help.
- How much lead time does my librarian need?
- The more the better, but a 2 week minimum advance gives your librarian time to discuss your need, create a lesson plan, reserve a library lab at your preferred time, and create new handouts for your students.
- Should I just have my librarian do a tour of the library…?
- Research shows that library sessions that are tightly allied in both timing and content to a graded research project result in the most actual learning. We will tailor every detail of your session to the immediate needs of your assignment, and present whatever activities, databases, and research concepts will be of most use. So, sure, we’ll do a tour if it meets your learning objectives -- or whatever else we decide together will best help your students.
- For what kinds of assignments should I request instruction?
- Any assignment that will require any kind of information use is a good candidate! But don't get stuck on the idea that “research” equals “term paper.” See our Creative Assignments page. We’d be happy to help you devise assignments that meet your learning objectives. See also our differentiated learning outcomes for Information Competency at OU.
- Does the library need to know about assignments for my class?
- Yes! It is extremely frustrating to students if materials are not available, instructions are out of date, or "treasure hunts" go awry. Please allow us to put your materials on reserve, alert other librarians of requirements and due dates, or, with enough lead time, even buy new materials. Contact your librarian as early as possible so we can provide the best possible service to students asking questions.
