Scheduling Class Visitations and Orientation/Instruction

School groups are welcome to visit Alden Library at any time. We ask that any group of 25 or larger provide advance notice of the visit and the purpose of the visit.

We recommend, however, that school classes visit the Libraries when the University is not in session. These periods are the winter break from Thanksgiving to New Year's Day and spring break, usually the third week in March. The Library is much less crowded during inter-session periods, allowing for easier access to facilities.

Library orientation and instruction may also be scheduled at that time. Teachers and group leaders can arrange sessions that will meet the specific educational objectives of the class visit. Demonstrations of ALICE, other electronic information resources, and the World Wide Web can be provided.

Contact Lorraine Wochna (740-597-1238) in the Reference and Instruction Department, Alden Library, to schedule a visit and/or instructional session.

Regional Borrowing Privileges for Students and Teachers

Students and teachers in the high schools within Athens, Hocking, Meigs, Morgan, Perry, Vinton, and Washington counties can borrow up to 5 items at a time from Alden Library with a Regional Patron borrowing card. A card may be obtained at the Circulation Desk. A photo ID is required and the card must be renewed on an annual basis.

Reserve reading items and periodicals may not be borrowed;the Media Library (2nd floor of Alden Library) will lend some videos to teachers, but generally Media Library materials are not available for borrowing by regional patrons. Teachers are advised to call Instructional Media in advance to reserve a video (593-2665) and will be asked to show a school ID or other proof of status.

Students under the age of 16 are required to use a Regional Patron borrowers card issued to their parent or guardian or a temporary card issued to members of visiting classes (see below).

Borrowing Cards for Visiting Classes

Students under the age of 16 visiting our facilities with or without a class will be issued a temporary library card (valid for 30 days). School officials or teachers should provide, at least a week in advance, a class roster (with students' Social Security Numbers and addresses), so borrowers' cards can be prepared and made available at the time of the visit. E-mail the list to Lorraine Wochna.

School Responsibility

We request and expect that, in exchange for extending borrowing privileges to students, school personnel will assist us in recovering overdue materials, in cases where this is necessary.
