Maps and Finding Aids Elsewhere in Alden LibraryMaps and Cartographic resources are also found in the following Departments: Reference Dept. (2nd floor): This department houses the main collection of atlases, including a number of historical atlases. It also has current city and state road maps and cartographic index sources, such as:
Government Documents Department (5th floor): The wealth of material in this department (which is immediately adjacent to the Map Collection) includes maps and atlases, such as census maps, CIA maps, Forestry Service publications, and Soil Surveys. There are special finding aids for those materials not listed on ALICE. Most sheet maps produced by U.S. government agencies are housed in the Map Collection (5th floor) and are listed on ALICE. Many older U.S. government produced maps can be located by using the Index and Carto- Bibliography of Maps, 1789-1969 - CIS US Serial Set Index, Part XIV. This volume provides access to over 50,000 maps in the U.S. "Serial Set" of government publications. (Inquire at Government Documents, 5th.) For older reference materials produced by the Library of Congress regarding maps and atlases browse the LC 5.2 section of the Government Documents collection. A fundamental and rapid change in the way maps are retrieved, stored, and used is the greatly expanded use of CD-ROM and direct on-line downloading of maps or data for producing maps. This is true of U.S. government-produced materials in particular and the Government Documents Department has obtained a great many CD-ROM titles and databases (along with associated viewing software of sometimes dubious functionality). The Department maintains a class/subject list of CD-ROM titles in its collection. Some highlights include:
Most of the on-line resources cited in Governmental/Public Sources are U.S. government-sponsored and you may wish to also consult the Library's Government Documents Department in person. Here is the Government Documents Department's home page. Archives and Special Collections (5th floor): This department has a few rare original maps, old railroad maps, local county atlases, University-related maps and plans, and other maps of local historical or genealogical interest. Older area plat maps are on microfilm (first floor); most cemetery maps are in Archives and Special Collections (W.E. Peters, etc.) |
