The Federal Geographic Data Committee coordinates the development of the National Spatial Data Infrastructure to cooperatively produce and share geographic data; this site has news and links.

The USGS Geospatial Data Clearinghouse "provides a pathway to find information about geospatial or spatially referenced data available from USGS" along the four broad themes of biological resources, national mapping, geologic, and water resources.

The GeoGratis site is a gateway to data for Canada including Canada's National Atlas base data, CANSIS, satellite data, watershed maps, etc.
