Topographic Maps

The Map Collection contains all topographic (and other) map series produced by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). With the exception of the 7.5 minute series, they are filed under SuDoc classification numbers in the regular collection. The 7.5 minute series are filed in special "PlanFiles" by state and quadrangle name, and are located across from the service desk.

Please consult with staff regarding printed indexes. For a useful online source where you can search for and print good quality topographic maps and more of the United states, see the Maptech MapServer (With a good monitor,etc., these approach the better quality of printed maps).

TopoZone is a site where one can find topo maps for around two million outdoor places throughout the United States. Maps a la carte, Inc. has worked with the U.S. Geological Survey to create easy web access to the USGS collection of topographic maps. Search by name or coordinates; at that point one can purchase, download, or consult/borrow a map in the Library's collection.

Due to staff and space considerations, only superseded maps for Ohio of the 7.5 minute series are retained. For pre-1945 topographic maps of whole country, 15 minute series, consult with staff.

The Collection also has considerable international holdings. A good reference resource is the three-volume Inventory of World Topographic Mapping series, MAP COLL Z6028 B575 1989 (Desk) which describes national mapping programs worldwide, contains bibliographies, and is a good source to track down potential historical and current government-produced map resources.
