Microforms Collection

The Libraries have older volumes of many periodicals (magazines, journals, and newspapers) in microform, usually either microfilm or microfiche. The records in ALICE for these titles will indicate which years are in microform.

Journals and Magazines

ALICE screen showing microform holdings The ALICE online catalog, from which this illustration comes, is the best place to look for the location of journals and magazines. As with the example here, issues of a particular magazine or journal may be in any of several places, depending on the year of publication.

Magazine stsorage cabinets in microforms collectionOne area of the Collection has storage cabinets for magazines and journals, which are filed alphabetically by their titles. Please do not hesitate to ask for advice on the most appropriate reader or printer, how to load, interpret citations, as well as to locate titles within sets.

Newspapers

alt=As is the case with magazines and journals, ALICE lists holdings (years owned) of many newspapers in microform. At the right is a sample screen for the Columbus Dispatch.

Newspaper stsorage cabinets in microforms There are several rows of cabinets for newspapers in microform, which are shelved alphabetically by their titles. Please do not hesitate to ask for advice on the most appropriate reader or printer, how to load, interpret citations, as well as to locate titles within sets.

Newspaper Listings

Many other newspapers, especially those of local or regional origin, may not be listed in ALICE at all. The three lists below should be taken as supplementary to ALICE, rather than replacements for the information in ALICE.

Periodicals in Microform Sets

Below are some of the microform sets which include embedded journal and newspaper titles, along with other types of documents:

  • American Civilization (19th century)
  • American Periodical Series (to 1850+)
  • Early American Newspapers (all titles up to 1820+)
  • English Literary Periodical Series (17th - 19 centuries);
  • "Library of Congress Early Black Newspapers Collection"
  • Gerritsen Women's History
  • History of Women Series
  • Indonesian collections (please inquire)
  • Popular Newspapers during World War I and II

Other Sources for Older Periodicals

Most newspapers now have websites, which may include recent articles and in some cases archives of back issues. For those of which we are aware, URL links are included in the listings mentioned above. The lists are not comprehensive, but are mainly based on what is housed in Alden Library.

For additional newspapers and resources not found in the lists, the following may prove useful:

  • In recent years, a number of major digitizing projects have resulted in the creation of long runs of periodicals available online. Here are a few of the titles that Ohio University has access to:
  • The Ohio Historical Society's Ohio Newspaper Index cites the approximately 4,500 titles on microfilm at the Society. Note this database indexes titles, not contents within the titles. Microfilmed newspapers are available for use at the OHS Archives/Library Reading Room or through Interlibrary Loan.
  • Newsbank Newsfile also indexes and maintains full-text files of from over 500 newspapers, from 1991 to the present. Older materials, covering 1971-1990, are on microfiche; please consult with staff.
  • InfoTree has several pages of records relating to newspapers and newspaper indexes: Items listed on these pages include printed indexes for a number of newspapers (e.g., the Columbus Dispatch and the Cleveland Plain-Dealer) which we have the Collection here. You will need to use these indexes to locate the exact dates and pages for the news stories you are seeking.
