This set contains roughly 6,500,000 pages of material including books, pamphlets, periodicals, biographies and autobiographies, fictional works, poetry, collection of various kinds, and selected federal, state, and local documents. Some non-U. S. materials are included. The set is strong in content and bibliographic access, but the format (ultrafiche) is sometimes difficult to read or copy. These 'ultrafiche' are laminated 3x5 sheets containing up to 1000 pages, items are arranged by "LAC" number. Much of the material has been cataloged on ALICE, but browsing the guides will provide an overview of the collection; four volumes -- author, title, subject and "biblioguide" Indexes. The Biblioguide volume is useful in focusing your research, and also for a given topic indexes chapters and journal articles. (Printed guides, MICRO or REF, Zl236 .L5 1971; 21,000 ultrafiche, M/Ultra section, ask at Desk); (The Microform staff can point out appropriate reading machines and assist with copying.)

- AMERICAN FICTION, 1774-1900. (WAF)
- (This set is based on Lyle H. Wright's American Fiction: a Contribution Toward a Bibliography, 3 vols to 1900, and early post-1900 works from the Library of Congress Shelf List of American Adult Fiction.) The latter post 1900 segments (to 1910) are not owned by Ohio University. The collection consists of approximately 14,000 titles -- novels, romances, tales, short stories, fictitious biographies, travels and sketches, allegories, and tract-like tales. It includes the notable, as well as the lesser known and not so notable. The set is a gold mine for research in American culture and lifestyles and for rare editions as they first appeared, as well as works of minor authors. (Microfilm 43 (ALICE may say MICRO PS 1]), ask at Desk. GUIDE, MICRO or REF Z1231 .F4 R4x.) Catalog records for this collection are now loaded and consulting ALICE for specific authors, titles, is a good option. If you encounter an American Fiction record, the source and location of the material may not be readily apparent. Scan toward the full bibliographic record for a WAF item number (e.g R689) and also note which volume of WAF is cited (e.g. vol I, II, or III.) Armed with this volume number and item number information the staff should be able to locate the work (eventually each item in the set will have a call number reflecting this information.)
Also see Wright American Fiction online which is a project of Indiana University include online every novel published in the United States from 1851 to 1875. When completed one will be able to view both the electronic text as well as the page images and the entire collection can be searched by keyword.
