The Center for Research Libraries is a shared accessions repository. Ohio University is a member.
Materials purchased include foreign doctoral dissertations, U. S. State government documents,
foreign newspapers, major costly microform and reprint collections, foreign documents. Ohio
University also participates in two accessions programs under the CRL umbrella -- the
Cooperative Africa Microfilming Project (CAMP), and the South East Asia Microfilming project
(SEAM). The CRL occasionally publishes a HANDBOOK describing its collections, consult
ALICE. CRL materials are increasingly represented in the OhioLink Central database (and
OCLC's WorldCAT) and can be borrowed by Ohio University students and staff. In most part the
1982 microfiche catalog is not needed because this information, plus new information, is available
via the OhioLink Central Catalog or via WorldCat. HOWEVER, as yet, item-by-item titles in
some microform sets, foreign dissertations, foreign documents, and other materials are not
necessarily cataloged and would not appear on OhioLink nor on the microfiche index. (230

CENTRAL FILES.
- The "Central Files", record group 59, are from the Department of
State's Internal and Foreign Affairs subject classifications of the Central Files (Decimal Files) now
housed in the National Archives. These files consist of instructions and correspondence received
from and sent to diplomatic posts abroad and include a wide range of materials reporting on
political, military, social and economic developments, minutes, interviews, texts of letters and
instructions, and translations of foreign documents.
This collection is based on decimal files
793, 893, 611, 993, and quite likely others. The materials consist mainly of reports of diplomatic
personnel throughout China and the Far East. To date the Library has the following series:

This micropublication consists of 69 studies by the Institute for Defense Analysis, the Rand
Corporation and other "think tanks" to provide data and analyses of China and Taiwan for
the executive departments of the U. S. government. Topics include land reform, military strategy,
the cultural revolution, Sino-Soviet relations, foreign policies, works of Mao Tse-Tung, etc. 8

CHINA. U. S. MILITARY INTELLIGENCE
REPORTS, 1911-1941. By the end of World War I the intelligence-gathering of the
military had emerged as a wide-ranging and sophisticated branch of the U. S. diplomatic and
defense community. American military attache staff reported on a wide range of topics, including
internal politics, socioeconomic conditions, and foreign affairs of the places where they were
stationed. Topics here include the revolution of 1911, the "twenty-one demands" (1915) and
intervention by Japan, the long struggle between Chiang's Kuomintang forces and the Communists
(1925+), Japanese occupation of Manchuria (1931+,) Mao Tse-tung's Long March with the Red
Army (1934-1935), and the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937+.) The source for these documents

CIA RESEARCH REPORTS. University Publications
of America has filmed reports from the U. S. Central Intelligence Agency producing sets under
broad geographical categories. One of the U. S. Central Intelligence Agency's mandates has been
to produce foreign intelligence reports to meet the needs of the President, National Security
Council, etc. The material consists of reports, intelligence memos and biographical reports. The
result has been a diverse body of documentation.

COLIN LEGUM'S AFRICAN COLLECTION.
Colin Legum is a well-known journalist, writer, and broadcaster in regards to the Africa
anti-colonial and anti-racist movements. The complete collection to date, described below,
contains Legum's own writings, materials relating to South Africa, Pan-Africanism, regionalism,
and to African liberation movements. Portions of the collection in the Center for Research
Libraries (CRL) are also noted.
Documents, Papers and Memoranda on the Growth of the Pan-African
Movement, from 1952 on; 44 microfiche and guide, in CRL.
Early Years of Apartheid: South African Press Digests 1949-1972. This
weekly digest of South Africa's principle newspapers and magazines was prepared by the South

Third World Reports 1982-1995+. This series consists of background
news analysis of Third World developments and relations to the major world powers aimed to

Press Cuttings Volumes on Africa, 1936-1987. The Guide lists the press
clippings in chronological order and includes a classified list of his writings (the film and
