KAEMPFER, ENGELBERT (1651-1716) East meets West. Part 2, The papers of Englebert Kaempfer (1651-1716) and related sources from the British Library, London [microform] : original records of Western traders, travellers, missionaries and diplomats to 1852.
Part 2 is largely drawn from the Sloane Manuscripts series and covers the papers of Englebert Kaempfer (1651-1716), the German physician who travelled extensively across Russia, Iran, Ceylon, Malaysia, Thailand and Japan from 1683 to 1693 and is known as the 'First interpreter of Japan.' We also include records of Jesuit Missions in Asia, 1593-1686; and the important manuscript diary of Richard Cocks (d1624), who was the Head of the English Factory in Japan, 1615-1622. 10 reels, DS872 .K34 2000a.

KENYA NATIONAL ARCHIVES
. This collection is based on the Kenya National Archive Collection on microfilm project at Syracuse University. However, this set of microfilm was purchased directly from Kenya and there are some variations which are indicated in and appended to the Microform Collection's copy of the respective Syracuse guides. The earliest documents date from 1896, the set covers through 1963. The documents in the collection are divided into the following sections:
1. Provincial and District Annual Reports (AR, 66 reels)
2. Provincial and District Political Record Books (PRB, 16 reels)
3. Provincial and District Handing Over Reports (HOR, 14 reels)
4. Miscellaneous Correspondence (MC, 11 reels)
5. Intelligence Reports (IR, 12 reels)
6. Debates of the Legislative Council and the National Assembly (Legislative Council Debates, 33 reels)
Sections 7-8 are not on microfilm.
9. Kenya Seyidie (Coast) Province, Correspondence & Reports, 1891-1962

KING, MARTIN LUTHER, JR., FBI FILES. Part I, FBI files; Part II, King-Levison file.
This set provides an unmatched source of primary material on the civil rights movement. Part I contains the FBI's detailed reports from field offices, correspondence about King, the FBI's reports to the White House about King and the civil rights movement, etc. Part II contains the files of Stanley Levison, one of King's most trusted confidants. Levison was reportedly a Communist functionary which contributed to the FBI's heavy-handed pursuit of King. Wiretaps on King are sealed until 2027, but Levison's are not, and they contain many verbatim transcripts of King and other civil rights leaders. 25 reels microfilm & guide, E185.97.K5 M294.

Korea. CIA RESEARCH REPORTS: JAPAN, KOREA, AND THE SECURITY OF ASIA 1946-1976
. One of the U. S. Central Intelligence Agency's mandates has been to produce foreign intelligence reports to meet the needs of the President, National Security Council, etc. The result has been a diverse body of documentation. The material consists of reports, intelligence memos and biographical reports. In this installment are several essays on the strategic importance of the Far East, many on Korea, and occasional reviews of problems in Indonesia, Australia, and the Philippines. Korea. O.S.S/State Department Intelligence and Research Reports Part I. JAPAN AND ITS OCCUPIED TERRITORIES DURING WORLD WAR II: 1942-1945
. To help formulate U. S. policy, the Office of Strategic Services and the State Department commissioned leading scholars to write special reports. This set consists of declassified reports on the political, social, and industrial/military affairs which document the structure and operation of the Japanese government in the war effort. Also covers the Far East and Southeast Asia -- Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Philippines, Indochina, Thailand, Burma, China and Korea. 16 reels microfilm & printed guide, DS888.25 .O8x.

Korea. O.S.S./STATE DEPARTMENT INTELLIGENCE AND RESEARCH REPORTS Part II. POSTWAR JAPAN, KOREA, AND SOUTHEAST ASIA: 1945- 1949.
A supplement to the above series, these declassified reports also cover Burma, Indochina, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Thailand. LANDMARKS OF SCIENCE.
(Series I and parts of Series II) Landmarks consists of first editions, and significant later editions, of scientific works world-wide from the beginning of printing to the early 20th century. Collected works of scientists are also included. If available, translations into English (or French or German) of works not published in those languages have been added along with editions in the original language. Also included are early scientific textbooks, out-of-print rare biographies, bibliographical collections, histories of science, etc. Landmarks II also includes scientific journals -- besides Microprint, some are reproduced on microfilm and some have been reprinted (general stacks, check ALICE). Some of the books in Landmarks II are on microfiche. Materials are arranged by author or title. Contents of Landmarks I and II have been placed on ALICE, but you may need staff assistance to locate materials. The call number "Q111.H3" is your cue that the title is in LANDMARKS as opposed to elsewhere in the Library. Journals are also in the Microform Journal/Newspaper listing. ALICE indicates Library has the whole Landmarks I collection, but Library holdings of Landmarks II are not complete, a card file in OCLC workroom lists Landmarks items held by the Library. Currently the Library has all of Landmarks I which is on Microprint. Landmarks I consists entirely of books. Landmarks II consists of books and journals; for books the Library has segments 1, 2, 10, 11 on Microprint, and segment 13 on microfiche; and in regards to journals the Library has segment 1 on Microprint and segments 15, 16, 18-21 reproduced on 35mm microfilm. The materials in the above two series contain the White House's 'country files' for this general region, mostly intelligence reports and analytical studies. Much of the illustrates the U. S. roles in the Bay of Pigs, the Cuban missle crisis, activities of Cuban exiles, Brazil's General Castelo Branco, the Dominican Republic, and Panama. The guides list each document and have analytical indexes. See "National Security Files" for additional materials.

. The Office of Strategic Services and the State Department sometimes assigned leading scholars to write special classified reports on economic, political, military and social matters, and biographies. This set is a collection of 369 such reports previously not available. Materials from the U. S. National Archives, DOS decimal files 712-739. These files are from holdings in the National Archives, records group 59, and are predominantly instructions to and dispatches from diplomatic and consular officials and are often accompanied by enclosures. Also included are notes between foreign diplomats in the United States and State Department officials, correspondence to other government departments and private businesses and persons. LIBRARY OF VIRGINIA'S DIGITAL LIBRARY PROGRAM
(DLP) has digitized more than 2.2 million original documents, photographs, and maps, and produced more than 80 fully-searchable databases, indexes, and electronic finding aids. Much of this material would be of general interest for U. S. History.

Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum. ... RECORDINGS OF TELEPHONE CONVERSATIONS, White House Series.
This series consists of recordings of telephone conversations, primarily made on Dictaphone "Dictabelt" Records, from January 1964 through January 1969, and corresponding printed transcripts (251+ sound cassettes and 26+ printed volumes, Micro Coll E846.R4 1996x). (Ohio University Library has a standing order to this series, additional transcripts and tapes may be available)

Included is a subset "John F. Kennedy Assassination-Related Conversations," consists of the recordings and transcripts of telephone conversations from November 22, 1963, through December 31, 1963, as well as conversations containing information related to the assassination of President Kennedy from later periods in the Johnson administration (34 sound cassettes and 4 printed volumes, Micro Coll E842.9 R432 1883x).

Using the collection:

  1. Visiting the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library's Telephone Conversations Description and Search Page page is useful to find out more about this collection and the best means of access to specific items. Not all the listening privileges will be available, but searching this site provides a good name and keyword index to the conversations.
  2. Click "Search the Telephone Conversations." Note instructions and do search.
  3. Clicking on a specific result entry will take one to a summary of the conversation, index terms, whether the conversation has been transcribed, and specific cassette number.
  4. Conversations that have been transcribed are basically arranged by date. If you find something on the cassette and wish to know whether it has been transcribed, search by cassette number and person's name. Many of the conversations on cassette have not been transcribed.
