- SWB. SUMMARY OF WORLD
BROADCASTS(Monitoring Report)
- 1939 -The SWB contains summaries of foreign
radio station transmissions, currently published five times a week, compiled by the Monitoring
Service of the British Broadcast Corporation (BBC.) Coverage began with five countries, very
soon expanded and is now about 140. The Foreign Broadcast Information Service (FBIS,) the
BBC Monitoring Service s United States counterpart started in 1941 and there has been close
co-operation between the two services to co-ordinate resources and share material. For older
materials in particular, the SWB makes a good index to the FBIS "DAILY REPORT" series, e.g.
if one finds a summary in the SWB and more information is needed, a full text is usually located in
the DAILY REPORT. In addition, the Joint Publication Research Service (JPRS) is part of the
FBIS and full text of larger broadcasts, especially those of scientific and economic content, may
appear in this series. The Government Documents, 5th floor, has the DAILY REPORT, 1961- , in
assorted formats; JPRS, TRANSDEX, 1968- .
Until 1947 the "SWB" was part of the Service's Monitoring Report and Digest of World
Broadcasts. Since 1947 the series has been a separate publication, issued in geographic sections--
currently; Pt. 1: USSR; Pt. 2: Eastern Europe; Pt. 3: Far East; Pt. 4: Middle East. Each issue has
a detailed contents page, the availability of additional indexing is currently being looked into. This
set is filed by title ("SWB") in the microform periodicals section; 758 rolls of microfilm
(1939-1972) and 11,500+ microfiche, 1972 - current. Note that the microfilm reels are NOT in
strict chronological order. The printed guide is useful to determine coverage of a given country
and in which series reported. Beyond the expected straight news, there are interviews, full text of
speeches, reports, proceedings, etc. Guide In process. (Also see -- DAILY REPORTS
and JPRS REPORTS.)
