U. S. BUREAU OF REFUGEES, FREEDMEN, AND ABANDONED LANDS.
General note: established after the War, the "Freedmen's Bureau" resembled, in many ways the work of later Federal social agencies. In rebuilding the South tasks included establishing and supervising schools; disposition of abandoned or confiscated lands; issuing rations, clothing, and medicine to destitute refugees and freedmen; establishing hospitals and dispensaries; and supervising camps and settlements for the homeless. Bureau officers worked with benevolent and philanthropic organizations. Types of records filmed include letters sent and received, telegrams, reports sent and received, endorsements sent, issuances, form reports, assorted registers. The first 63 rolls mainly cover the Japanese occupation of Manchuria, highlights being the Mukden incident in 1931, military action in Shanghai in 1932, and the course of the undeclared war, 1937-1939. U. S. NATIONAL ARCHIVES AND RECORDS SERVICE.
(This is a very extensive and varied collection of materials; browse both directions from this point.) -- The largest portion of this material consists of Department of State diplomatic instructions and consular dispatches, records concerning internal affairs of other countries, U. S. relations to countries, and relations between countries. The cut-off date for many of the above materials is 1906, for others 1929. In general Department of State material beyond 1929, though from the National Archives, have been purchased through private vendors and are cataloged separately. Another large portion of the National Archives collection are the census schedules of high interest to genealogists. Also within this collection can be found a wide range of inquiries, tribunals, & commissions; seized enemy records; Papers of the Continental Congress; older records of various departments of the U. S. Government, e.g. Department of Interior (Indian Affairs); etc. For an overview of what the Library has, or what might be available, consult the marked U. S. The statutory function of the National Security Council (NSC) is to advise the President with respect to the integration of domestic, foreign, and military policies relating to national security. Under strong-willed advisors such as McGeorge Bundy, Henry Kissinger, and Zbigniew Brezinski the NSC has been quite influential. This set provides the 'inside view' for it contains all and the full range of NSC papers that have ever been declassified -- formal policy papers, progress reports, background documents, the 'P' files (policy papers with restricted distribution,) 'Mill' papers (staff papers never submitted to the NSC,) NSC actions, national security action memoranda, and national security study memoranda (these latter two items are basically Presidential directives.) One of the U. S. Central Intelligence Agency's mandates has been to produce foreign intelligence reports to meet the needs of the President, National Security Council, etc. The result has been a diverse body of documentation. The material consists of reports, intelligence memos and biographical reports. This installment offers CIA staff evaluations of most of the leading issues of the period including numerous ones on the Vietnam situation from the early beginnings to later attempts to read enemy intentions and assess damages on both sides. Several reports review the political machinations of the Saigon government. Attention is also given to events in neighboring Cambodia, Thailand, and Laos. VIETNAM, THE WAR IN; CLASSIFIED HISTORIES BY THE NATIONAL SECURITY COUNCIL, 1964-1968.
Filmed from the holdings of the Lyndon Johnson Library, reproduced here are 2,000 top-secret histories compiled by the NSC including White House Situation Room reports, daily reports from Gen. Westmoreland, reports from U. S. ambassadors, and military messages. There is a reel guide, but no subject index. The following general topics are covered: Gulf of Tonkin (reel 1); deployment of U. S. forces (reels 2-3); Honolulu Conference (reel 4); Manila Conference (reel 5); background to Johnson's speech of March 31, 1968 (reels 6-8). VIETNAM AND SOUTHEAST ASIA 1960-1980:
Special Studies Series. The Special Studies Series consists of "think tank" special reports written for the executive departments of the government. This set deals primarily with the Vietnam War and the politics of North and South Vietnam.
