The Music/Dance Library Collection

Video collection in the Music Dance LibraryThe Music/Dance Library Collection reflects the course offerings and faculty interests in the Schools of Music, Dance, and Comparative Arts.

The breakdown of items in the library is as follows:

  • Books - 24,700
  • Scores - 22,400
  • Microforms - 2,400
  • Bound periodicals - 6,000
  • Video cassettes - 2,400
  • LP recordings - 9,900
  • Audio cassettes - 15,000
  • Compact discs - 14,500
  • Current Periodicals received - 135

Everything, with the exception of the microforms, are on the Ohio University Library Catalog, ALICE. The card catalog was closed during the summer of 1994.

The score collection is well balanced between research and practical application. There are the standard collected works, Denkmaler, and standard concert works, along with a strong solo and ensemble performing collection. There is an emphasis on music composed by women and black composers, violin music, horn music, and band scores. The book collection emphasizes modern dance, music therapy, music education, and music business. The microforms feature music and dance dissertations and theses, and early music dictionaries and encyclopedias.

There is a very comprehensive videocassette collection: music and dance performances, world music and dance, instrumental pedagogy, jazz, and other popular styles.

Standard concert repertoire, both solo and small and large ensemble, are well represented in the sound recordings (LPs, cassettes, and CDs). Again, women and black musicians are emphasized. The jazz collection (older as well as newer styles) is outstanding.
