Changes to Library Web Pages
Wednesday, July 30th, 2003Things are always changing on the Web, and the Libraries’ web pages are no exception. On July 30, we introduced a new look for both our general website and our InfoTree Information Gateway. The initial motivation was the University’s requirement that the Ohio University logo appear at the top left of all official University web pages. We decided to take advantage of this necessary redesign opportunity to make some additional changes–which will be, we hope, improvements. The most dramatic changes are to the Libraries’ “front door” page:
- We replaced the previous ALICE link with a new link to ALICE, and a “live” search box for the basic types of search. To get the full ALICE main menu, just click on the blue link.
- Because Academic Search Premier is such a good source to start looking for periodical articles, we decided to feature it on the home page, as well as InfoTree’s top page.
- The link to InfoTree remains on the front page, along with an expanded description of its contents.
- Links to various pages with information about the libraries are in the middle panel of the page, along with a search box for the general website. Please note that this search box is for information about the libraries–collections, services, staff, etc.–not for books, articles, or other research materials.
- On the right we’ve added explicit links to some of the more frequently needed pages, such as Course Reserves and Interlibrary Loan, as well as places to learn more about libraries and research.
With InfoTree, in addition to adding the Ohio University logo, we tried to steamline the header at the tops of each page a bit and added a link to the Advanced Search feature of the system. Links for browsing by Types (Formats) and Places, which were formerly at the top of each page, are now on the Advanced Search page.
