PIN Numbers No Longer in Use

Monday, July 19th, 2004

As of July 16, we are no longer using PIN numbers to login to various library functions. PIN numbers, which users created in ALICE, had been used for checking one’s library record (renewals, reviewing OhioLINK requests, etc.), the online Course Reserves system, borrowing items from other Ohio University Campuses or the Library Annex, Interlibrary Loan requests, and InfoTree accounts.

From now on, library patrons at all Ohio University campuses will need to use only their names and Social Security numbers for these purposes. The logins all go through secure servers, so patrons’ Social Security numbers should be transmitted safely.

When logging in to Infotree and the Interlibrary Loan/Document Delivery system (ILLiad), you must enter your first and last name as
they appear when you check your library record in ALICE
. As an example, if ALICE lists you as Thomas J (for Joseph) Jones then you must enter Thomas and not Tom, Tommy or Joe. ALICE is somewhat more forgiving; it only requires a last name plus the Social Security number.

New Exhibit of Ohio University Posters in Mahn Center

Friday, July 2nd, 2004

A new, colorful exhibit of posters documenting events from Ohio University is now on display in the Mahn Center for Archives & Special Collections on the fifth floor of Alden Library. Entitled “Posters Speak for Themselves,” the exhibit features activities from 1928 to the present. The exhibit includes posters that document the campus observance of V-E Day (victory in Europe day) in 1945, an appearance by the Four Preps singers in 1963, speakers for China Week in 1973, the observance of Cold Turkey Day in 1976 that encouraged people to stop smoking, a concert by Wynton Marsalis in 1993, and Carrot Top’s appearance in 1996.

In describing the purpose of the exhibit University Archivist Bill Kimok says, “One often hears that the university environment is and has always been somewhat removed from the so-called ‘real world.’ This exhibit dispels that notion. It chronicles in one way or another the visits of entemporary leaders in their respective fields and performances by popular culture icons as well as events and themes current in everyday national and international life.”

The Mahn Center is open from 8-5 Monday-Friday and noon-4 on Saturdays. The exhibit will be in place through the fall term.
