Alden Library Announces October Exhibit on “The Art of Recovery”
Thursday, October 7th, 2004The Ohio University Libraries and Tri-County Mental Health and Counseling Services, Inc. (TCMH&CS) are collaborating on an exhibit of artwork by consumers of mental health and substance abuse services. The “Art of Recovery” will be exhibited on the fourth floor of Alden Library from October 5 – 31.
The exhibit complements a public reception for artists and poets held at Tri-County Mental Health and Counseling Services, Inc., 90 Hospital Drive, Athens, Ohio, on October 14 from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm. The Art of Recovery and Poetry Chapbook (vol. II) will be available for purchase at the reception.
“Many of our consumers have tremendous artistic gifts,” says Loretta Lewis-Wells, Quality Improvement Director and exhibit coordinator for TCMH&CS. “We are pleased to offer this exhibit outside our facility. Art, poetry, and writing are excellent avenues for people to communicate with one another and share their innermost thoughts and feelings, which may not be expressed in spoken words.”
“The items in the exhibit will include painting, photography, fiber art, and mixed media,” she adds, “and many will be for sale.”
“This is an excellent opportunity for Alden Library to reach out and partner with part of the Athens community,” states Patricia Smith-Hunt, head of the Libraries’ Preservation Department and a member of the 317 Board (Alcohol, Drug Addiction, and Mental Health Services) serving Athens, Hocking, and Vinton Counties. “More importantly, the Art of Recovery exhibit will give library staff and users an opportunity to see the talents of community members who, coincidentally, are experiencing mental health challenges and as such are too often either forgotten or marginalized.”
On October 14 between 10:00 am and 11:45 am prior to the reception, Tri-County Mental Health and Counseling Services, Inc., will have a shuttle van available to transport artists and guests between Alden Library and TCMH&CS. Alden Library is situated on the south side of Ohio University’s College Green.
