The Friends of the Libraries of Ohio University are sponsoring the 8th annual Readathon on Tuesday-Wednesday, May 10-11. The two-day event will be held on the West Portico of Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium on the College Green. Here is the complete schedule for the Readathon.

The featured reading this year will be by Rabbi Danielle Leshaw of the Hillel Foundation at 12:30 on Tuesday Afternoon, May 10. Her reading will in part commemorate the 350th anniversary of Jewish settlement in America.

“The Readathon is an event the Friends hold annually to celebrate the importance reading has in the university and the role the Libraries have in providing reading resources,” states Lois Gerig, president of the Friends. “We are excited about the exposure the Memorial Auditorium location will give this year’s event.”

“We welcome all the groups that will be participating,” states event coordinator Professor Greg Kremer, of the Russ College of Engineering and Technology. “We enjoy seeing the way academic and community groups join together during these two days.”

Kremer expects approximately 75 readers will participate. Campus groups include the Provost’s office and the respective colleges, support units such as Communication & Marketing and Lifelong Learning, and student groups such as Phi Alpha social work honorary and Sigma Tau Delta English honorary society. Community groups include Civitan, Kiwanis and Rotary clubs, neighborhood associations, six religious congregations, and a 4th grade class from East Elementary School.

Athens Mayor Ric Abel will kick off the second day, Wednesday, May 11, at 9 a.m. The concluding reader at 5:45 on Wednesday will be library student assistant Rudi Sukandar, one of this year’s recipients of the Friends of the Libraries Scholarships. Monies raised through donations in support of readers go into the Friends Scholarship Fund.

In the event of bad weather the Readathon will move to the 1804 Room in Baker Center. The program is open to the public and is supported by a donation from the Ohio University Credit Union.
