“Alden Library Hosts Mateo Galvano Exhibition”

Ohio University’s Alden Library will host an exhibition of selected works by abstract painter Mateo Galvano from February 10 until March 18. The art will be on display in the Learning Commons, located on the second floor. An opening reception will be held on Friday, February 10, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. In addition, Mr. Galvano will host an informal gallery talk on the subject of his creative process at the exhibition site on Saturday, February 11, at 5:00 p.m. The public is invited to both events.

Entitled “Heartland”, the exhibition presents paintings that employ a variety of media on canvas and wood, including Sumi ink, oil paint, enamel and pencil. Each work offers a unique interpretive composition that “deals with emotion without being Expressionistic.” Galvano’s art is not esoteric; rather, it “reveals itself and invites the viewer to find, perhaps, a reflection of the Self.” In his work Galvano traverses “a path between chaos and contemplation, resulting in canvases that suggest intuitive maps to inner resolution.”

“Most of the work is nonrepresentational,” says Galvano, but some pieces “reference landscape or organic occurrences. Sometimes a human or animal figure appears. A boot falls from the sky and turns into a bird; a small girl is running to hide in the brush.” In regard to the creative process, Galvano describes ” a combination of accident, of the artist’s hand, and strongly colored forms and ruled lines.” There is a “weathered look” inherent in his paintings, “as if they have been exposed to the elements and some of the paint rubbed or worn away.”

Born near New York City, formerly a resident of Santa Fe, and currently residing in Athens, Galvano divides his time between projects in Ohio and New Mexico. His art has been exhibited in Boston, New York, Santa Fe, Norman, Oklahoma and Provence, France, and is included in numerous private collections throughout the United States and Europe. This is Galvano’s first exhibition in Ohio.

Galvano is currently represented by Addison Arts Gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico and Mainsite Contemporary Art in Norman, Oklahoma. For more information about his art, see “addisonarts.com” or “mainsite-art.com”
