Alden Library to honor retirees

Thursday, June 15th, 2006

The Alden Library will host a retirement reception in honor of Marine Dillon, Cheryl Ewing, Paulette Hodges, Gary Hunt, Lars Lutton, Barry Scott, and Norma Wagner from 2 to 4 p.m. Wednesday, June 28, in the Leisure Reading area on the fourth floor of Alden Library.  Music and refreshments will be provided.

Summer Library Hours

Tuesday, June 13th, 2006

Beginning June 19, 2006, Ohio University Libraries will begin operating on
its summer schedule.

Main Library hours:
Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Sunday from 5 to 9 p.m.

Learning Commons hours:
Monday through Thursday from 7.30 a.m. to midnight
Friday from 7.30 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Saturday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m
Sunday from noon to midnight.

When the Main Library is closed, the Learning Commons will offer a paging
system to retrieve circulating materials needed by patrons from the Main
Library area.

Friends of the Libraries Announce 2006 Awards and Scholarship Recipients at Annual Meeting

The Friends of the Libraries of Ohio University presented five awards and announced three scholarship recipients at the organization’s Annual Meeting on May 31, 2006.

Awards for individual support were presented to Prof. Phillip Bebb, Judy Daso, Prof. Gifford Doxsee, Prof. Janis Holm, and Richard Purdy. Bebb and Purdy were recognized for work on the Friends Scholarships selection committee. Daso was recognized for service on the same committee and at book sales. Doxsee has been a long-time book sale volunteer. Holm served the English department as its representative to the Libraries.

Three student assistants in Alden Library received Friends Scholarships for the upcoming school year. The recipients, announced at the meeting, are Nicole Baum, Breanne Smith, and Rudi Sukandar. Baum, a senior Art Education major from Millfield, OH, works in Instructional Media Services. Smith is a sophomore majoring in Journalism who works in the Center for International Collections and hails from Lucasville, OH. Sukandar, a graduate student in the Scripps College of Communication who also works in the Center for International Collections is from Indonesia.

In other business the Friends of the Libraries elected Greg Kremer as President, Catherine Brown as Vice President, and Mary Kaye Jordan, Richard Moffit, and Beth Vanderveer as directors. Art Marinelli stepped down as president, and Olivea Oldham and Jorg Waltje completed terms as directors. The Friends also announced a gift of approximately $9,500 for the purchase of a large world globe for the Learning Commons, a new skeleton for the Health Sciences Library, and a tabloid-size public scanning unit as the group’s annual gift to the Libraries.

Following the business meeting, History Prof. Steven Miner gave a presentation, “The Three Faces of War,” on the war in the Soviet Union during World War II.

The Friends of the Libraries of Ohio University was formed in 1979 with the purpose of strengthening the Libraries, enhancing their collections, and promoting their usefulness. The group has raised more than $300,000 for operations, gifts, and scholarships in support of the Ohio University Libraries since its establishment.
