Database Changes

Thursday, June 28th, 2007

This month there are several changes in the array of databases that the Libraries provide to the University community.

Academic Search Premier changes to Academic Search Complete
By far the most significant change is the upgrade of our major multidisciplinary database, Academic Search Premier. It has a new name, Academic Search Complete, and much-expanded contents. While the “old” database, Academic Search Premier, covers more than 8100 publications (including 4500 full-text journals, of which 3600 are peer-reviewed), its successor, Academic Search Complete encompasses nearly 11,000 publications (including 5300 full-text journals, of which 4400 are peer-reviewed).

Other Databases:
Several other databases from RLG will be discontinued at the end of June, including:

Get Your PID Number!

Monday, June 18th, 2007

To better protect your personal information, we have eliminated the use of
Social Security numbers from the Libraries’ computer systems for faculty,
staff, and students.

If you are a student or a currently employed faculty or staff member, the new PID numbers will immediately be required for several library functions including:

  • viewing your Library Account, e.g., to renew books or check the status of OhioLINK requests
  • accessing electronic reserves
  • requesting books from OhioLINK, the Annex, or other OU campuses

When entering your PID number for these functions, do not include the letter “P.”

Faculty and staff have not had Personal Identification (PID) numbers up to this point. That number is on the new identification cards. On the Athens campus, these cards are being distributed at the Office of Information Technology located in Room 154 of the HDL Center.

Those faculty and staff members who find it impractical to pick up their new ID cards immediately may obtain their PID numbers by going to this address https://portal.finance.ohiou.edu/mypid. Enter your Oak login and password and, in a few moments, your new nine-digit PID number will appear on the screen. Very important: if you do this at a public computer, be sure to exit all browser windows when you’re done, so that your PID number will remain confidential.

If you are NOT a student or a current employee, please continue using the number you have been using up to this point.

Students can find their PID numbers on both their old and their new identifications cards.

By fall, you will need an updated OHIO ID card to check out library materials.

Those at regional campuses should consult technology.ohio.edu/idcards/ for information on getting ID cards, or call the Service Desk at 740-593-1222.

If you have any questions, please contact the Library at 740 593-2695 or 740 593-2699.
