New University ID Cards and PID Numbers Now Required to Use Library Resources

Friday, September 21st, 2007

ID Cards
As of September 14, new University ID cards are required to check out library materials. The new ID cards are available in the ID Card Office in the HDL Center during regular business hours.

PID Numbers
Over the summer, in the interests of privacy, we eliminated the use of Social Security numbers from the Libraries’ computer systems for faculty, staff, and students. If you are a student or a currently employed faculty or staff member, the new PID numbers are now required for several library functions including:

  • viewing your Library Account, e.g., to renew books or check the status of OhioLINK requests
  • accessing electronic reserves
  • requesting books from OhioLINK, the Annex, or other OU campuses

When entering your PID number for these functions, do not include the letter “P.”

PID numbers are on the new ID cards. You may also obtain your PID number by going to this address https://portal.finance.ohiou.edu/mypid. Enter your Oak login and password and, in a few moments, your new nine-digit PID number will appear on the screen. Very important: if you do this at a public computer, be sure to exit all browser windows when you’re done, so that your PID number will remain confidential.

Those at regional campuses should consult technology.ohio.edu/idcards/ for information on getting ID cards, or call the Service Desk at 740-593-1222.

If you have any questions, please contact the Library at 740 593-2695 or 740 593-2699.

Crack the Code Game

Monday, September 10th, 2007

Have you cracked the Code Game yet? The Ohio University Libraries’ Code Game is up and running. First year students especially, but all OU students, are invited to solve a series of nine challenging puzzles about the library and the university. For every correctly completed challenge, you get another chance at the grand prize, $100 in book money.

The game is on until October 2. To get started, just ask for the first puzzle at the second floor Library Services desk in Alden Library, any time the library is open. Each task, once completed, tells you where to find the next one, and so on. In the process you will see every floor of the library, and discover services and resources you never knew existed. It’s a fun way to learn about the big maze we call the library at OU.

Competition for those grand prizes might be tough: already 115 puzzles are in the Big Box, waiting for the final drawing for three $100 book store gift certificates on October 2. But don’t despair; there are also the three remaining weekly drawings for a 2G jump drive and the chance to win instant prizes for t-shirts and pizza coupons any old time.
