Deanda Johnson to Speak on Incarceration Literature

Deanda JohnsonOn Tuesday, November 10 Deanda Johnson, Coordinator of the African American Research and Service Institute and a Visiting Instructor in the Department of African American Studies at Ohio University, will speak on “Freedom Denied: African American Prison Literature and Other Stories of Confinement.” Her presentation is part of the Libraries’ Culture Showcase series.

Ms. Johnson’s presentation will be from 3:00 – 4:00 pm in the Friends of the Library Room (Alden 319). Refreshments will be available.

Akil Houston to Speak on OU’s African American Studies Program

Dr. Akil HoustonOn Tuesday, October 20 Dr. Akil Houston, Assistant Professor in the African American Studies Department, will speak on “Re-Membering African American Studies at Ohio University.” His presentation, part of the Culture Showcase series, will focus on a film he is doing about the department’s history.

Dr. Houston’s presentation will be from 2:00 – 3:00 pm in the Friends of the Library Room. Refreshments will be available.

3 Millionth Addition to Libaries’ Collection

University Libraries celebrated the acquisition of its’ three millionth item on Saturday, October 3, 2009 as a part of a year-long celebration commemorating the 40th anniversary of the Vernon R. Join President Emeritus Vernon Alden on Saturday, October 3 from 6:30-9:30 p.m., and explore the hidden treasures within Alden Library and celebrate a special 40th anniversary commemorative evening.

Cruise: The Mahn Center for Archives and Special Collections including the E.W. Scripps Collection, Cornelius Ryan Collection and the Alwin Nikolais and Murray Louis Dance Collection.

Journey Through: The new Yao Ceremonial Artifacts Collection in the Frederick & Kazuko Harris Fine Arts Library.

Explore in Amazement: Cultures from around the world in the Hwa-Wei Lee Center for International Collections.

Peruse: The diverse photography of Ohio University alumni.

Discover: Rare books including a 13th-century, illuminated Bible seldom seen by the general public.

Plus, witness the unveiling of the three millionth addition to the Ohio University Libraries. Proceeds will benefit the Friends of the Libraries’ Scholarship Fund.

Yao Ceremonial Artifacts Opening Reception

The Yao exhibit will debut Saturday, Sept. 19, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in the Frederick and Kazuko Harris Fine Arts Library on the third floor of Vernon R. Alden Library. Ohio University President Emeritus Vernon R. Alden will preside over the opening reception. The artifacts comprise the largest collection of Yao Daoist ritual paintings in the U.S. and one of the largest such collections in the world.

New Exhibit to Celebrate 40th Anniversary

A new exhibit celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the Alden Library debuts Friday, May 15, 2009 on the 5th floor of Alden Library. Learn about campus life in 1969, the year Alden Library opened its doors, as well as the history of the Libraries back to 1814! This exhibit was created by University Archivist Bill Kimok and includes a variety of photos and memorabilia from the University Archives in the Mahn Center for Archives and Special Collections
