How do I find Ohio University theses and dissertations?

Searching in ALICE

By Author or Title: When you know the author or dissertation/thesis title you want, do an Author search or a Title search on ALICE.

By Subject or Keyword: You can also search ALICE by subject or keyword. Limit the search by Material Type and then choose THESES/DISSERT, as in this example:

By Department: You can also browse a list of Ohio University dissertations or Ohio University theses by department. The departments and programs are listed as they were named at the time the theses or dissertations were written. To rearrange these lists by date, click on Modify/Sort and then check the Sort Results by Year box.

Print Copies of Dissertations and Theses

Recent Ohio University theses and dissertations not submitted electronically are shelved on the 7th floor, following books with “L” call numbers. Older titles are in the Library Annex, from which they may be requested in ALICE. There are additional non-circulating archival copies of dissertations and theses housed in the Department of Archives and Special Collections and the Library Annex.

Electronic Copies of Dissertations and Theses

Starting with 1997, all dissertations completed at Ohio University are downloadable for free in Proquests’s Dissertations and Theses database. Starting with 2001, Ohio University dissertations and theses submitted electronically are available at OhioLINK’s Electronic Theses and Dissertations Center

Honors Tutorial College Theses

The Libraries have been cataloging some theses written by students enrolled in the Honors Tutorial College since the late 1990s. Since about 2004, however, the collection is fairly complete.

The easiest way to locate those honors theses we do have is to follow this link in ALICE, which lists them by department.

The theses themselves are located in Archives and Special Collections, on the 5th floor of Alden Library.

The HTC Thesis Database is not really a database; it’s a PDF file that lists every HTC thesis title and author in chronological order.

Beginning around 2010, the full text of Honors Theses is available from the OhioLINK Electronic Theses and Dissertations Center. Please note the two separate categories there:
