The microform collection on the 1st floor of Alden Library houses historical issues of newspapers from Ohio and around the world.

  • To find a specific newspaper on microfilm by title, do a Periodical Title search in ALICE for the title of the newspaper to confirm that it is located in the 1st floor microfom collection, and what dates of that paper the library has. Then go to the 1st floor of Alden Library to find the reels you want. Individual microfilm reels are arranged by title and date in alphabetical drawers (see floorplan)
  • To find newspapers from a particular place, do a Keyword search in ALICE for the name of the place plus the word “newspaper.” For example: Zanesville AND newspaper.
  • To find particular articles by subject in a newspaper on microfilm, use a subject index first to locate the issue and date of the article(s) you need.

Not sure of the newspaper title?  Try the U.S. Newspaper Directory from the Library of Congress. Search for newspapers, past and present, by city and state. Then search for the title in the library catalog as above.
