Saving and Downloading

Collage of computer storage mediaThere are several ways to save your files on library computers, and you are strongly encouraged to save often.

Floppy Disks

Most machines in the library have floppy drives, to allow you to save to a 3.5" floppy disk. The Technology Services desk in the Learning Commons on the second floor sells floppy disks for $1.00 (cash only).

USB Drives

As most machines are equipped with USB ports in the front and back of the workstation, you have the option of saving with a USB flash drive. Simply stick the flash drive into a USB port on the computer, and the Windows operating system will recognize it as an additional storage device.

CD-R or CD-R/W

Also, most machines are equipped with CD burners, allowing you to save large files on a CD-ROM. For directions on how to burn a CD on library computers, please look at this document. The Technology Services desk in the Learning Commons on the second floor sells CD-R's for $1.00 and CD-R/W's for $2.00 (cash only).

Zip Drives

The PCs in the Learning Commons are equipped with ZIP 750 disk drives. These drives allow you to save your work to a 750 MB Zip Disk. Please note that while the drives will read the older 100 MB Zip Disks, they will not write to the older disks. The Technology Services desk in the Learning Commons on the second floor sells Zip 750 Disks for $11.00 (cash only).

Oak Storage

Oak Storage is also a very good storage option, as all files are stored on the Oak Server. Students have an allocation of 200 MB on the Oak Server, and Faculty/Staff have 500 MB of storage space. The primary advantage of this storage method is that you do not have to worry about a floppy going bad or losing your flash drive. With Oak Storage, you can access your files from almost any computer with an Internet connection. Click here for directions on accessing Oak Storage.

The computer lab in the Academic Advancement Center also offers a variety of file storage options.
