ILL Policies and Procedures

Interlibrary Loan is a service provided by the University Libraries (Athens) to obtain research materials not available from our collections or via OhioLINK borrowing. We acquire copies of articles from journals and texts not owned by our library and not available electronically through one of our full text resources. We borrow books not owned by our library and not available through OhioLINK borrowing services.

Ohio University students, faculty, and staff from the Athens campus are eligible for use of these services at no cost. We also serve Friends of the Libraries and authorized Loansome Doc patrons. All ILL users are required to comply with our policies.

Please check ALICE and the OhioLINK Library Catalog to see if a title is available before submitting an Interlibrary Loan request for books.
Submitting requests

Requests must be sent via the ILLiad request form.

When requesting material via Interlibrary Loan, please take care to complete all fields as accurately and completely as possible. Good citation information will assist with quicker service. Avoid using abbreviations and include the source of the citation when you can.

Picking up requested material

Articles and book chapters will be provided in PDF format. Notification of availability and instructions for viewing will be sent to your Ohio University email address.

Books, microforms, and other borrowed materials can be picked up at the Circulation Desk in the Alden Library. Infrequently materials are in-library use only per the lending library’s policy. A valid Ohio University identification card must be presented. Notification of availability will be sent to your Ohio University email address.

You will be notified if there are any problems with fulfilling a request.

Do not remove bands, stickers or paperwork from the borrowed materials.

Loan periods
The loan period for books, microforms, and other borrowed materials is determined by the lending institution. Renewals are possible, but are at the sole discretion the lending institution. Institutions that loan materials reserve the right to recall items at any time for their users.

Because ILL is dependent on good relationships with other libraries, returning material on time is critical. We charge $.50 per day per overdue ILL item.

Renewal requests

All renewal requests must be received by the due date. Renewals are granted at the discretion of the lending library; if our renewal request is denied, materials must be returned by the due date to the Circulation desk in Alden Library.

Returning borrowed material

Books, microforms, and other borrowed materials should be returned to the Alden Library Circulation Desk. Do not put materials borrowed through Interlibrary Loan in any of the book drops.

Because ILL is dependent on good relationships with other libraries, returning material on time is critical. We charge $.50 per day per overdue ILL item.

Failure to return ILL materials on time may result in suspension of ILL privileges. Replacement fees for lost and damaged items are at the sole discretion of the lending library.

Copyright restrictions

The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research." If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction in excess of "fair use," that user may be liable for copyright infringement. This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.
